Fellowship TU Delft to Catapult, Leeds (UK)

The TU Delft team visiting Catapult. From left to right: Chris Barnes (Catapult, host), Robin Bahl (TU Delft, TPM student), Koen van Arem (TU Delft, EEMCS student), Arjen Jansen (TU Delft, lecturer IDE), Carlijn Gunst (TU Delft Sports Engineering Institute), Alexis Derumigny (TU Delft, assistant professor EEMCS).

Introduction by our great host Chris Barnes, the industry representative for Catapult in the A4See project. Chris managed to get a large group of colleagues involved in our visit, helping us closing the gap between academia and industry.

Mike Lee helped us in better understanding the product development process at Catapult. During the presentation, the apparel used by Catapult was demonstrated.

Presentation by Jozef Baker on Catapults’ product applications in tennis. Jozef explanation on the use of applied mathematics allowed for more input from the EECMS colleagues on theory such as the Random Forest method.

Following the presentation on TU Delft, the faculty of IDE and sports applications in science in special, we had a quiz for Catapult employees. The winner was happy to win a IDE-Senz umbrella, a great example of applied aerodynamics in product development. Alexis presented some basic principles of statistics, Koen presented the preliminary results of his internship at Ajax on the creation of an Expected Threat (xThreat) model. The discussion that followed after the presentations was a great example of how this visit contributed to the goals of the A4SEE project; closing the gap between university and industry!

With Jerome Durussel-Baker, Catapult lead data scientist, we had an interactive conversation on how you can use data science into sports. Very interesting and a broad view on this subject because of the different expertise in the group.

Catapult will visit TU Delft for sure to meet some other colleagues with expertise in sensors, wearable technologies and data science. Looking forward to this!
